Description
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and is renowned for its beautiful canals. In fact, many people consider the city to be “the Venice of the North.” Originally a fishing town in the 12th century, it became a very important center for trading during the 17th century. It is the country’s largest city with one million people, and nowadays is considered a financial and culture center.
Museums are a big tourist destination in Amsterdam, with more than 50 museums that attract several million visitors a year, including the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Other attractions include the Anne Frank House, the Flower Market, the Hash Marihuana Museum, the Albert Cuyp Market, windmills and the Vondelpark. Many people visit the city because of its reputation for being open-minded. Some may consider this attitude refreshing, while others may be offended – especially if they go to the Red Light District. Everyone can find something they like in Amsterdam, whether it’s culture, partying or just strolling around on the beautiful European streets.
