Description
Despite Puerto Rico‘s current status as a territory of the United States, this archipelago was actually conquered by the Spanish and ruled by them for 400 years. The Spanish ceded Puerto Rico to America after the Spanish-America War ended in 1898, but its influence on culture and language remain prevalent. In a linguistic twist, back in the day the island now known as Puerto Rico used to be called San Juan, and the current city of San Juan was called Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico is well known for its music, which is influenced by musical styles and instruments from all over the world but has a sound all of its own. Many other social and tourist activities revolve around Puerto Rico’s natural beauty, which features mountains and hundreds of miles of beaches.
