Description
South Africa is known for its diversity in cultures and languages and consequently, is incredibly ethnically diverse. It has been argued that there is no single South African culture because it is so ethnically diverse. Jews have been a part of South Africa’s development from the very beginning. Portuguese Jewish cartographers and scientists contributed to Vasco Da Gama’s discovery of the Cape of Good Hope in 1497. The Cape Town Jewish community is fairly homogenous. Approximately 80 percent of the Jewish community is of Lithuanian descent and centers around Orthodox tradition, while the remaining 20 percent center around Reform tradition.
