Israel is One of the Healthiest Nations in the World

Israel is one of the healthiest countries in the world, according to a ranking by Bloomberg.

On Wednesday, the news outlet posted a list of 20 countries that are making strides in health consciousness, and the Jewish state came in at number six. Israel received a health grade of 85.97 percent, a total health score of 91.97 percent, and a health risk penalty of 6 percent.

The top three countries were Singapore, Italy and Australia.

The list was compiled using sources from the UN, World Bank and World Health Organization. To be considered, nations had to have a population of at least 1 million. Factors like smoking averages, alcohol consumption, obesity and physical activity were looked at to create the final rankings.

Out of a complete list of 145, the US ranked 33, with the Congo, Lesotho and Swaziland taking the bottom three slots.

Israel has European-style socialized medicine. What do the top ten healthiest countries in the world have in common? Universal health care and low health care spending as share of GDP at around 10% or lower. The U.S. ranks 33rd and spends 18% of GDP on health care. Obamacare's individual mandate (2014) can't come soon enough!
