Once again demonstrating the power of technology and social media, an Israeli Instagram user has chosen to launch a campaign, which is quickly gaining traction, using the photo-sharing network.
The photographic campaign, “Stop the Violence in Israel,” is spreading, with hundreds of Israelis uploading pictures that feature the color red.
The campaign was started by Ori Taub, a popular Instagram user who decided to take action after many violent incidents occurred the previous week in Israel.
“I wanted to protest,” Taub told NoCamels. “My goal was to raise awareness and make people stop for a moment to understand what’s going on here. In a way, I wanted to shock.”
Taub said he regularly uses Instagram as his “emotional arena,” as it allows him to express his feelings with each uploaded picture.
“It was very clear to me that I want to express how I feel about the latest violent events. I realized this could be important for other people as well,” he said.
Other Instagram users reused Taub’s initial photo to promote the campaign. More than 400 Israelis have since joined in to Taub’s campaign, uploading pictures of red lips, red flowers, red stoplights and even a red phone cord tied around a wrist.
Using the hashtag #stoptheviolenceinisrael, Israelis and others are continuing to upload images which are creative and emotional.
“I have to admit that each participant took the project to a different artistic direction,” said Taub. “The outcome was very moving.”
