Lawsuit Launched Over Hungarian Jewish Actor Called ‘Filthy Jew’

The Hungarian Jewish Faith alliance filed an official complaint Tuesday on behalf of Hungarian actor Jozsef Szekhelyi, who was called a “filthy Jew” at a cultural board meeting in Eger.

An audio recording of the slur, made last September by a politician from the right-wing Fidesz party, surfaced earlier this month. During the meeting, one of the participants said, “Just because everybody says that Szekhelyi is a filthy Jew... he is still a good actor who is fantastic at reciting [15th century French poet Francois] Villon.”

The lawsuit comes after Israel’s ambassador to Hungary Ilan Mor canceled a planned visit to Eger in protest.

Eger’s mayor, Laszlo Habis, has launched an investigation of the incident. “We are aware that Eger would not be what it is today without Jews,” he said in a statement. “I would like Ambassador Mor to get to know us and see that there is no discrimination in Eger.”
