The White House is taking flak once more for refusing to name Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In a video currently making rounds on the Internet, White House spokesman Jay Carney dodges questions during a Thursday press briefing in Washington. Several reporters try to get a straight answer on the Israeli capital issue, but Carney never replies.
Jerusalem is Israel’s officially recognized capital within its own government, though many foreign nations refer to Tel Aviv as the capital. The US position is typically that Israel’s capital must be determined through negotiations with Palestine.
Reporter: “What city does this administration consider to be the capital of Israel — Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?”
Carney: “I haven't had that question in a while. Our position has not changed, Connie.”
“What is the position? What's the capital?”
Carney: “You know our position.”
“I don't.”
A second reporter: “No, no, she doesn’t know. She doesn’t know. That's why she asked.”
Carney: “She does know…”
“I don't.”
“She does not know. She just said she doesn’t know. I don't know.”
A few minutes later, as the briefing is finishing up, the original female reporter asks again, “Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?”
Carney: “You know the answer.”
“No, I don't know the answer. We don't know the answer. Could you just give us an answer? What do you recognize — what does…”
Carney: “Our position hasn’t changed.”
