Boris Gelfand's Run at World Championship a Win For Chess in Israel

Israel's Boris Gelfand may have come up just short at the World Chess Championship, finishing second to reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand last week in Moscow. But with more than $1 million in winnings as his share of the prize money, Gelfand certainly did pretty well for himself by taking Anand into tiebreakers. He did pretty well for chess in Israel, too. In the wake of last week's World Championship, the country's Sports and Culture Minister, Limor Livnat, announced that an additional one million …More

Israel's Boris Gelfand in Dead Heat with World Chess Campion

While the World Chess Championship doesn't have the same furious pace of action or hard-hitting intensity of more traditional sporting events, the action on the field has nothing on the chessboard for closely matched rivals and tightly contested battles. Just ask Israel's Boris Gelfand. After the first six games of Gelfand's best-of-12 series with Viswanathan Anand of India ended in draws, Gelfand finally broke through and scored the first win of the series on Sunday. However, Anand, the defending champion, …More
