Bulgaria: EU Could Still Act Against Hezbollah

Bulgaria will provide further evidence to persuade the European Union to designate Hezbollah's armed wing as a terrorist entity, the country’s interim prime minister said. Marin Raikov said in Brussels on Wednesday that some EU countries were "not sufficiently convinced" by Bulgaria's evidence of Hezbollah's involvement in a suicide bombing last year that killed five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian bus driver. "We will continue the investigation," he said. "We will continue to work on this very …More

Bulgaria Commemorates Saving of 48K Jews, Remembers 11K Lost

Bulgarian officials commemorated the nation’s efforts to save 48,000 Jews from Nazi persecution, while also admitting for the first time its failure to save 11,000. "The objective evaluation of the historic events cannot ignore the fact that 11,343 Jews were deported from northern Greece and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, then under German jurisdiction," the Bulgarian parliament said in a declaration. The declaration was made on the 70th anniversary of Bulgarian protestors successfully saving tens of thousands …More

US Officials Continue to Press Europe on Hezbollah

US government officials have called on Europe to list Hezbollah as a terrorist group. "For too long Hezbollah has tried to pose as nothing more than a political and social welfare group while plotting against innocents in Eastern Europe, from Eastern Europe to East Africa, from Southeast Asia to South America," Vice President Joe Biden said at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual conference on Monday. "We know what Israel knows: Hezbollah is a terrorist organization. Period," Biden said. "And …More

More than 100 members of the US Congress sent a letter to the European Union's foreign policy chief urging her to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. The bipartisan letter was sent Monday to Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union. It follows a recent report by Bulgarian investigators concluding that Hezbollah had planned, financed and executed the 2012 Burgas bombing, which killed five Israelis and a Bulgarian. "The …More

Bulgaria Releases Suspect Names in Burgas Bus Bombing

Bulgaria has released the names of two suspects from last summer’s Burgas bus bombing, which killed five Israeli tourists. The identities were given to Europol, Europe’s police authority, but were not made available to the general public. The news came just days after Bulgaria announced suspected Hezbollah ties to the crime. Hezbollah is not currently listed in Europe as a terror group, as it is in the US and Israel, though several European countries have pushed the EU to make the designation. "I …More

Hezbollah Denies Involvement in Burgas Attack

Hezbollah denied it was involved in a terrorist attack in Bulgaria that killed six, including five Israelis. Two days after the Bulgarian government implicated two men with links to Hezbollah to the terrorist attack last July, deputy Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said Thursday that Israel is making "allegations and incitements and accusations against Hezbollah" because it has not succeeded in defeating it militarily, Reuters reported. "Israel is leading an international campaign to intimidate people and countries …More
