Israeli Nonprofit Launches Humane Education Program in Arab Schools

A new program aimed at teaching compassion towards animals will be implemented in the fall in 60 northern Arab schools. Hakol Chai, an Israeli nonprofit with a mission to stop animal suffering, developed the culturally specific program to help teach the children how to be humane towards animals. Hakol Chai founder, Nina Natelson, who lives in the United States, pointed out that Arab children often have a different experience with pets than children in the US or other parts of Israel, where well-cared for and …More

Stuart Elenko worked at the Bronx school until his death in 2009, teaching a Holocaust Leadership Class. While teaching, he shared his extensive collection of Holocaust artifacts with his pupils. At Rutgers, a Colorful Way to SUpport Israel

Despite the stress of finals, Rutgers University students are taking a break from their studies to advocate for Israel… through paint. Last Wednesday, Rutgers Hillel set up a 20-foot mural in front of their building on College Avenue for students to graffiti about Israel. “Any student who wants to contribute to the graffiti wall can do as such all day today,” Jerry Enis, Rutgers Hillel’s communications consultant, told Israel Campus Beat before the event. “While they are painting, …More

Mother Wants 'Pornographic' Anne Frank Diary Banned from School

A Michigan mother is making headlines after calling on state schools to ban a “pornographic” version of Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl.” Gail Horalek filed a formal complaint after noticing a copy of the book her seventh-grader was reading contained passages referring to the labia and clitoris. "The problem is the school is giving the seventh graders inappropriate material and not explaining it to the parents," Horalek said. “If they watch any kind of movie with a …More

Peace Week Events 'Spread the Message'

Question: What do you get when you mix finger painting with cross-college training conventions and games on college quads? Answer: Israel Peace Week celebrations on college campuses across America. Israel Peace Week began as a grassroots initiative a few years ago when a group of Hasbara fellows on college campuses were looking for a way to spread the message that Israel wants peace. Since then, it has been adapted by students at dozens of campuses who devise new names and new methods to capture the attention of …More

Israeli Journalism School Named in Daniel Pearl's Honor

A journalism school at an Israeli college has been named in Daniel Pearl’s honor. The Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya opened the Daniel Pearl International Journalism Institute on Wednesday, a testament to the life of a journalist killed in the line of duty. Pearl was kidnapped by Pakistani radicals in 2002 while working for the Wall Street Journal. Before his beheading, his last words were, “My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.” Pearl’s story has become …More

How Mayim Bialik Teaches Her Sons About the Holocaust

One of Mayim Bialik’s blog posts this week discussed the important consideration required when deciding how to tell her children about the Holocaust. While her blog at “Kveller” has provided some questionable information in the past, like the experience of breastfeeding her son until he turned 4, this particular post is actually rather insightful. Although she grew up with a bubbie who survived Nazi occupation, Mayim recalls never hearing the firsthand account from her grandmother because she …More

Israel Divestment Resolution Overturned by University of California, Riverside Students

Sean Savage, JNS.org The University of California, Riverside (UCR) student government overturned a recently passed student senate resolution that urged the University of California (UC) system to implement Israel divestment. When the resolution—titled “Divestment of Companies that Profit from Apartheid”—had passed in early March, opponents of the Israel divestment measure argued that they were not given enough time to prepare for the vote. “There was not enough time or opportunity …More

Yeshiva College: Beginnings of an Iconic University

Yeshiva University is as synonymous with Jewish education as NASA is to space exploration. The famous school, however, originally began under a different name. On March 29, 1928, Yeshiva College opened its doors in New York City. It was the first liberal arts and sciences college under Jewish authority, a sign of the American Jewish community’s want to apply themselves to new ways of learning. The school started small. It was organized by a group of Orthodox rabbis concerned that young adults in the New …More

Hate Crimes Shut Down Oberlin, Lena Dunham Dismayed at Alma Mater

Oberlin College canceled classes yesterday after a campus wide trend of hate crimes, including swastika and homophobic graffiti and racial epithets used during Black History Month. The Ohio school put a halt to scheduled classes to host “unity rallies” to draw attention to the rising problem. In recent weeks, Oberlin has encountered students dressed in KKK-style robes, the n-word scrawled over Black History Month posters, and swastikas graffitied on windows. In one incident, a student posted a sign …More
