Newseum Reverses Decision to Honor Hamas Reporters

A preeminent journalism museum seems to have reversed its controversial decision to honor two Hamas reporters. DC’s Newseum announced last week that it would add Hussam Salama and Mahmoud Al-Kumi to its memorial wall of journalists slain in the line of duty. Salama and Al-Kumi died in Gaza last November during Operation Pillar of Defense. Both men were members of Al-Aqsa, Hamas’s media arm and a US-designated terrorist group unto itself. The decision was criticized almost immediately, particularly …More

Hagel: US Strategy is to Reinforce Israel, Arab Allies

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said reinforcing Israel's edge and bolstering security relationships with neighbors like Egypt were both US priorities. Hagel, speaking Thursday to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy's annual Soref Symposium, described his recent visit to Israel and the region, his first since assuming the defense secretary post in February. "Beyond rocket and missile defense cooperation, DoD has been working for more than a year to increase Israel’s ability to confront and …More

Israel Strikes Gaza Terror Site After Lag B'Omer Attack

Israel struck a terrorist training site in Gaza yesterday, following rocket fire from the Strip. A Gazan rocket launched Saturday evening landed at the Sdot Negev Regional Council, as local residents gathered to celebrate Lag B’Omer, prompting the Israeli response. Sunday morning, the Israeli Air Force successfully targeted a training and weapons facility in Gaza, making a direct hit. The Kerem Shalom border crossing was also shut down, though humanitarian aid will still be allowed through. The strike …More

2 Rockets Fired on Israel from Gaza

Two rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza last night, landing in an open field in Eshkol. No injuries have been reported. The 11 pm attack comes on the heels of similar firings over the last two weeks, after months of relative peace following a ceasefire after Operation Pillar of Defense in November. Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned retribution would be in order if the missile attacks did not stop. Hamas, which runs Gaza, has not taken responsibility for the most recent firings, blaming …More

Bibi to Gaza: 'We Will Respond Vigorously'

Benjamin Netanyahu warned further military action would be taken if Hamas does not put a halt to increased rocket fire over the last 24 hours. “If the lull is violated, we will respond vigorously,” the Israeli prime minster said today. “The security of Israel’s citizens is my top concern and we know how to defend the security of our citizens.” The comments came after two more missiles were fired on southern Israel from Gaza this morning. The attack followed an Israeli airstrike …More

Israel Responds to Gaza Rockets with 1st Strike Since Pillar of Defense

Rockets continued to fire from Gaza into Israel Wednesday morning, after an evening of crossfire that marked the first back and forth since a ceasefire last fall. Tuesday, two Gazan rockets fell in southern Israel, setting off sirens and sending residents in Sderot fleeing for safe houses, though no serious injuries were reported. It was the estimated third time Gaza has sent rockets since last November’s ceasefire, at the conclusion of Operation Pillar of Defense. Israel hit back last night in an air …More

Military Investigation Reveals Inside Look at Gilad Shalit's Capture

Details about Gilad Shalit’s capture have come to light, following the ex-IDF soldier’s sit down with military investigators. Shalit, who was famously held captive by Hamas for five years, spoke about the moment he was kidnapped, as well as his fear to fight back. “I was completely confused. I did not think about anything. I was in shock,” Shalit said, according to the Jerusalem Post. The Post ran an extensive overview of the investigation, which reveals some of the failings that might …More
