The fourth most wanted Nazi criminal was arrested in Germany yesterday. Hans Lipschis, 93, was taken into custody for allegedly aiding in the deaths of 1.5 million prisoners at Auschwitz. "[The suspect] appeared before a judge and was taken into custody,” said the prosecutor's office in Stuttgart. "The indictment against him is currently being prepared." Lipschis was deported from the US in 1983 for covering up his Nazi past, though he has long maintained he worked only as a cook at Auschwitz from 1941 …More

Germany Investigating Accused Nazi in Philadelphia

Germany has opened a war crimes investigation against a retired toolmaker living in Philadelphia. Johann "Hans" Breyer, 87, is accused of working as an SS guard at Auschwitz. Breyer admits that he was an Auschwitz guard, but says his post was outside the Nazi camp and he had nothing to do with the deaths of Jews inside its gates, according to The Associated Press. The US Justice Department tried for years to strip Breyer of his citizenship and deport him, in a case reminiscent of John Demjanjuk, a Cleveland-area …More

An 87-year-old Nazi suspect could be brought to trial in Germany. A German prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday it had recommended charges be brought against the suspect, under suspicion that he served as a concentration camp guard in Poland. The unnamed man currently lives outside Germany, and a trial would require his extradition. The individual in question is accused of involvement in 344,000 deaths at Auschwitz. Few other details were given, but prosecutor Kurt Schrimm told the AP there is …More

Demjanjuk Estate Files New Appeal in Bid for Restored US Citizenship

The estate of convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk again has asked an appeals court to help posthumously restore his US citizenship. In a filing Monday, Demjanjuk's estate asked the full 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to take up the case. In June, a three-judge panel of the court ruled that Demjanjuk’s US citizenship cannot be posthumously restored and that his death made the case moot. Demjanjuk, a former Ohio autoworker, died in southern Germany on March 17 at the age of 91. The …More

Demjanjuk Attorneys Ask Court to Posthumously Restore his US Citizenship

Attorneys for convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk have asked a US appeals court to restore his citizenship posthumously. The attorneys in their request of April 12 asked the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to reinstate Demjanjuk's citizenship or to order a hearing on the question, The Associated Press reported over the weekend. They argued that US District Court Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland made a mistake by not reopening the case when Demjanjuk requested it last year. In asking Polster to …More

Convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk will be buried near his home in suburban Cleveland. A German funeral home reportedly said the body of Demjanjuk, who died on March 17, will travel to Cleveland next week. The US Consulate in Munich confirmed that Demjanjuk's body was being returned to his family, according to reports. The Associated Press reported this week that Jewish leaders are concerned that a Demjanjuk gravesite in the United States could become a shrine to neo-Nazis. Demjanjuk, 91, died in an …More

Convicted Nazi Criminal Dies at 91

Convicted Nazi guard John Demjanjuk died Saturday at the age of 91, ending a decades-long campaign in which the Ukrainian-born criminal tried unsuccessfully to prove his innocence. The deceased, who was born Ivan Demjanjuk, became a US citizen working under the name John following World War II. He was deported from Ohio to Israel in the 1980’s under claims his true identity was that of notorious Nazi guard “Ivan the Terrible.” Upon being found guilty of the Treblinka soldier’s crimes, he …More

Nazi War Criminal’s US Citizenship Appeal Denied

An Ohio Judge denied convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk's appeal to regain his US citizenship Tuesday. Demjanjuk hoped that newly discovered documents, which suggested that some incriminating evidence was fraudulent, would overturn his deportation orders. US District Judge Dan Aaron Polster rejected Demjanjuk's citizenship claim because he lied about his whereabouts to gain entry into America. "John Demjanjuk has admitted that he willfully lied about his whereabouts during the war on his visa and …More

Simon Wiesenthal Center Launches New Nazi Investigation

The Simon Wiesenthal Center announced it is launching “Operation Last Chance II,” which plans to bring to justice those who served in Nazi concentration camps. The SWC will use the recent guilty sentence of Sobibor death camp guard John Demjanjuk to try to convict dozens of others in a similar situation where it is known the individual was involved in the camp’s day-to-day operations, but there is no hard evidence of a specific crime committed. “The Demjanjuk conviction at long last …More

Investigation of Nazi Death Camp Guards Reopens

Hundreds of long dormant cases against former Nazi death camp guards will be reopened due to the precedent set by the conviction of John Demjanjuk, who at age 91, was deported from the United States back to Germany to face charges. Demjanjuk was convicted in May of 28,060 counts of accessory to murder, all of which occurred during his time as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in Poland. The prosecutors in his case argued that by proving Demjanjuk was a guard at a camp whose sole purpose was extermination, it was …More
