Superman: Saving his Jewish Creators

Rafael Medoff, JNS.org Millions of Americans will flock to movie theaters this week to see “Man of Steel,” in which Superman will once again be called upon to save the world from some menace. But back in 1975, Superman’s Jewish creators found themselves broke, nearly homeless, and desperately in need a hero of their own. It’s a story with the pathos and drama of a comic book adventure—and it has a happy ending. As teenagers growing up in Cleveland’s mostly-Jewish Glenville …More

Sylvester Stallone has turned to Twitter to recruit veterans for "The Expendables 3." He began easy, posting this little riddle to woo Steven Seagal. Next he began hunting for a "young Sigourney Weaver," though he couldn't be bothered to spell her name right. Spelling is clearly for wusses. That said, the strategy appears to be working. According to the tweets, Seagal and Wesley Snipes appear to both be on board. Nicolas Cage and Jackie Chan are also being considered as additions to the cast, according …More

The chilling story of Richard Kuklinski, a contract killer notorious for freezing his victims to confuse time of death, is brought vividly to life in writer-director Ariel Vromen’s new film “The Iceman,” now in theaters. Between 1948 and 1986, Kuklinski killed between 100 and 250 people, while maintaining a suburbanite existence with his wife and two daughters. This dual life, and the peculiar moral compass he employs to maintain it, is ultimately his downfall. Jspace caught up with Vromen, an …More

Tribeca Film Festival: Review of ‘Big Bad Wolves’

It’s not hard to see the parallels to “Little Red Riding Hood” in the opening of “Big Bad Wolves,” writer-director pair Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado’s second foray into the thriller/horror blend. A golden-haired child in a red dress and bright red, patent leather shoes plays hide and seek with friends in the woods. Foreboding music pounds, the picture slows and she smiles, nymph-like, as she shuts herself in a wardrobe in an abandoned building. Then, suddenly, she is …More

Tribeca Film Festival: Review of ‘A Case of You’

A writer struggles with inspiration. Then, a chance moment of synergy with a barista in a hipster coffee shop provides a muse. He is obsessed. He has found the perfect woman. He decides to craft himself into the perfect man for her. If “A Case of You” already sounds like a combination of “Ruby Sparks,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and every other indie-aspiring romantic comedy you’ve seen lately, you’re not wrong. Nothing is terribly unique about director Kat …More

Tribeca Film Festival: Review of ‘Six Acts’

Inspired by true events, “Six Acts” chronicles the destruction of a girl as she attempts to reinvent herself through six acts of increasing sexuality that begin to look more like sexual abuse. This opening salutation by Israeli director Jonathan Gurfinkel will undoubtedly divide critics and audiences between those who hail it as an arresting, gritty exploration of teenage desire and those who dismiss it as smutty and sometimes dull. Gili, a forceful performance by Sivan Levy, changes schools to …More

Atlanta Jewish Film Festival: Review of ‘What's In a Name?’

What makes for a Jewish movie? It’s not a simple question, but one worth examining given the inclusion of French drama “What’s In a Name?” in the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. The critically acclaimed film, based on the filmmakers’ 2010 play, charts the progression of a dinner party where childhood friends poke at old wounds through snappy dialogue. The farce opened number two in France against “The Avengers,” no small feat given the action’s visceral, visual …More

Woody Allen’s Next Movie May Be Close To Home

Moviemaker Woody Allen is seriously considering filming his next movie in Israel after holding talks with Israeli officials over a campaign aimed to persuade him to film in the state. Israeli President Shimon Peres reportedly met with Allen in New York earlier this year to discuss the possibility of filming a movie in Israel, but editors at the Jewish Journal may be deserving of one of Andy Cohen’s “Mazels” as a thank you instead of Peres. Editor Rob Eshman began the campaign to bring …More

Robert Kraft says he’ll stick to football after giving acting a try...and failing miserably. The New England Patriots owner made his acting debut in an audition video that actress Ricki Noel Lander taped for an undisclosed Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn film. Ricki needed someone to fill in for the role Owen will ultimately play, and Kraft was more than willing to lend a helping hand. We're guessing he didn't expect the tape to go viral, however, else he may have tried a bit harder with his lines. The script is …More

At the MTV Movie Awards pre-show last night, he told MTV.com how lucky he feels to kiss Watson—even if it was only for their movie “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” He said, “It happened in front of a crew, and people were there, and we did it a few times. And that was it. It's kind of odd when you're doing it for a movie. It's kind of weird. She's cool. It wasn't as awkward as it could …More
