Holocaust Victims’ Violins to be Used in Monaco Concert

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo will perform a concert in Monaco featuring instruments of Jewish Holocaust victims. Several violins belonging to Jews murdered by the Nazis will be played at the May 5 concert at the Grimaldi Forum, and the stories of their owners will be told, according to a report in the Nice Matain French daily. German Office to Investigate 50 Alleged Auschwitz Guards

A Nazi crimes agency in Germany will launch an investigation of 50 alleged former Auschwitz guards living in the country. Following a precedent set by the successful 2011 case against John Demjanjuk, the Central Office for Clarification of Nazi Crimes will begin reviewing cases in the coming weeks, according to reports from the German WAZ media group. France Returns Art Stolen by Nazis

France’s Ministry of Culture returned seven valuable paintings looted by the Nazis during the Holocaust from two Jewish families. Six of the paintings were given to Boston-area resident Thomas Selldorff, 84, who came to Paris to collect the works during a ceremony Tuesday, according to Le Parisien. Another painting was returned the same day to a lawyer representing the relatives of Josef Weiner, a banker from Prague who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. The Israel-based Shem Olam Holocaust and Faith Institute on Thursday showcased items that may have been used for Passover rituals at the Chelmno death camp in western Poland. The items were discovered during excavations of the site in pits containing prisoners’ belongings. One item is a worn out and partially torn Haggadah that was burned by the Nazis.
