Islamist Held for Offering to ‘Guard’ Norwegian Jews with AK-47

Norwegian police have increased security around Oslo’s main synagogue after an Islamist extremist threatened to “protect” the Jewish community with an “AK-47 assault rifle and a hunting permit.” Police on Oct. 27 recommended indicting Ubaydullah Hussain, the 27-year-old leader of the radical Islamic organization Profetens Ummah. He was arrested last week after Norwegian media reported on a comment that appeared on his Facebook account: “I will give them protection … as …More

Jews in Oslo Ask Police to Register Anti-Semitic Incidents

A Jewish group in Norway reportedly has asked Oslo police to begin registering anti-Semitic incidents following an uptick in their occurrence. Members of the Det Mosaiske Trossamfund organization say they have experienced 11 incidents of harassment, vandalism and threats in the last month, the News and Views from Norway website reported, citing the Vart Land newspaper. Among the incidents are threatening letters, Nazi salutes, and rocks and bottles thrown at a synagogue in Oslo. Police reportedly told the group …More

Swedish Professor Connects Israel to Norway Terror Attack

A Swedish professor has insinuated that Israel may have been behind the terror attacks committed in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik last July.  Research professor Ola Tunander of the Peace Research Institute Oslo published an article in a Norwegian journal, asking for a reexamination of Brevik’s motives for his attack. Breivik killed eight people in a bombing in Oslo, and then 69 on the small island of Utoeya the same day. Tunander’s theory focuses on tensions between Oslo and Jerusalem over …More

Oslo Attack: It Wasn't a Muslim (phew)

When news of the terrorist attack on Norway broke, the first thing I thought was, “why would anyone attack Oslo?” Then I tensed up, praying that it wasn’t a Muslim who did it. There was a dangerous outcry brewing in the air in the wake of breaking news on the bomb attack in Oslo and the massacre at a summer camp 19 miles away from the capital; you could just tell that people were ready to lash out at the first hint that the attacker was a Muslim terrorist sponsored by al-Qaeda. Muslim immigrants …More

Israel’s ‘threat’ to void the Oslo Accords will only harm Netanyahu

On Monday, Barak Ravid revealed to readers of this newspaper that the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem was considering punishing the Palestinians for their declaration of statehood by scrapping the Oslo Accords. This "threat" is akin to a fellow saying he'll cut off his own nose to spite someone else's face. If the Oslo Accords did not exist, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have had to invent them. Netanyahu's advisors, who came up with the "threat," could learn a thing or two about diplomacy and …More

Israel Offers Aide and Support To Victims of Norwegian Terrorist Attacks

Israel has extended offers of help to the government of Norway after a shooting spree at a Norwegian Labor party summer camp and a bomb attack in Oslo left up to 98 people dead in an act of domestic terrorism. It took an hour and a half for a police SWAT team from Oslo to arrive at the camp, located about 19 miles away from the city center, to seize the alleged gunman Anders Behring Breivik. After his arrest, police looked into Breivik’s blogs which denounced immigration and Islam in particular, although …More

Oslo rabbi: Sadness and mourning have overtaken us all

After a right-wing extremist murdered at least 93 of his fellow citizens in Norway in what is being called the country's most devastating attack since World War II, Norwegians, overcome with mourning, feel the palpable tension in the air. "This event was so powerful, it feels like something has changed forever, as if nothing will ever be the same," says Rabbi Yoav Melchior, who has served as Oslo congregation rabbi for past five years. Israelis currently in Norway understand this sort of atmosphere, describing …More
