Op-Ed: NY's Jewish Community Report Can Apply Elsewhere in US

The 2011 Jewish Community Study of New York was released with some fanfare last week. Some of the UJA-Federation of New York’s survey results came as somewhat of a surprise. After a decrease from about 2 million Jews in 1970 to 1.4 million in both 1991 and 2002, the region’s Jewish population increased to 1.54 million in 2011, reflecting higher numbers of both children and elderly. Even more surprising was that nearly 500,000 Jews now live in Orthodox households, making the eight-county area (New …More

Study Examines Israel’s Internet Usage

A recently published survey examining both Hebrew and Arab speaking Israelis and immigrants across the range of the religious spectrum produced interesting results about the ways Israelis use the Internet based on their sects and economic incomes. The survey, “Israel in the Digital Age 2012,” used a sample size of 1,200 people, including children, teenagers, ultra-Orthodox Jews, Arabs and new immigrants. It was spearheaded by Dr. Yuval Dror of the School of Media Studies at the College of Management …More

Survey: Israel Losing Ground with Germans

A new survey suggests that Germans have lost some love for Israel over the past three years. In the poll of 1,002 citizens, 36 percent said they liked Israel, down from 59 percent in a similar survey conducted in January 2009. Also, only 21 percent believe that Israel cares about human rights, down from 31 percent in the earlier study. Seventy percent of those polled May 15-16 said that Israel pursues its own interest without consideration for other peoples--11 points higher than the '09 survey. Fifty-nine …More

Obama’s Jewish Support Rises Over Past Six Months, AJC Poll Finds

President Obama enjoys the support of three-fifths of American Jews, according to the latest American Jewish Committee survey, a significant improvement over where he stood half a year ago in the organization’s polling. The poll, released Monday, shows Obama with 61 percent of the Jewish vote, as opposed to 28 percent for Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is the likely Republican nominee. That’s an improvement for the president over an AJC survey in September, when Obama scored 50 …More

ADL Finds European Anti-Semitism on the Rise

Anti-Semitism remains at “disturbingly high levels,” according to a new poll released today, commissioned by the Anti-Defamation League. “Attitudes Toward Jews in Ten European Countries” shows that nearly one-third of Europeans surveyed hold anti-Semitic beliefs. “The survey is disturbing by the fact that anti-Semitism remains at high levels across the continent and infects many Europeans at a much higher level than we see here in the United States,” ADL National Director …More

Iran Named Number One US Enemy

Americans consider Iran to be the United State’s top enemy, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. The data showed that 32 percent of US residents named Iran the biggest enemy facing America, up from 25 percent last year. Iran has topped the list of enemies on Gallup’s poll since 2005. Gallup attributes the top ranking to Iran’s pursuit of nuclear capabilities, which threatens top American ally Israel and could disrupt the flow of oil out of the Middle East. Support for Israel Increasing in the United States

Americans’ level of support for Israel is on the rise, according to a survey conducted by the Israel Project. The survey says that 60 percent of American voters support Israel, the highest rate since 2009. “This poll shows that Israel is significantly more popular among American voters than either the president or Congress,” Israel Project Founder and President Jennifer Laszlo-Mizrahi said. “America has become very partisan, but this is a subject that seems to cross that …More

The Characteristics of American Jews

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public life, which does demographic analyses of the intersection between religion and public affairs, conducted a survey of 35,000 Americans recently; unsurprisingly, it’s evident that Jewish Americans are different from other Americans in several ways, but they are most similar to Hindus in education and earning potential. Jews represent about 1.7% of adults in America, although they could also be hiding away in the ‘unaffiliated’ category. In education, Hindus, …More
