Israelis are being exposed to dangerous pesticides at rates far above the residents of the European Union. A recent report by the Israel Union for Environmental Defense found high levels of 105 pesticides on fruits and vegetables, many which have been banned in the EU due to their carcinogenic properties and dangers to healthy, childhood development. Sephardic Chief Rabbi Amar Rules Against Bug-Free Vegetables

Israel's chief Sephardic rabbi, Shlomo Amar, issued a ruling saying that bug-free leafy vegetables represent a health risk and should not be used. Bug-free brands of vegetables are popular among Orthodox Israelis, but they use a large amount of pesticides. A recent OECD survey found that Israelis are generally healthy eaters who still know how to indulge. The survey, which compared food consumption in 25 developed countries, showed that Israelis eat an average of 435.6 pounds of vegetables per person per year. Israel fell third in this ranking behind Greece and Turkey.
