NeuroQuest: Detecting Alzheimer’s Before Symptoms Appear

Maya Yarowsky, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News Nearly one in eight people over the age of 65 in the United States are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease each year. As this alarming rate continues to grow, Israeli company NeuroQuest is dedicated to revert this trend. Their technology is based on the measurement of certain immune biomarkers (indicators of the biological state of the organs) in the patient’s bloodstream. This new method of testing for neurodegenerative diseases may change the way …More

Israeli Researchers Testing Solar Solution to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions

Israeli researchers are testing a new method to turn brown coal into an environmentally friendly fuel source. The project, located at Weizmann Institute of Science, plans to use highly focused solar rays to reduce the CO2 emissions caused by burning fossil fuels. “Our plan is to make the coal burning less polluting in every sense, in terms of greenhouse gas, and our technology can also scrub the other pollutants from the emissions,” said Professor Jacob Karni, the head of NewCO2 Fuels, the firm …More

Israeli Scientists Teach Humans To Sense With ‘Whiskers’

NoCamels Team, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News While humans use mainly their sight and sense of touch to locate objects in their environment, rats use an entirely different sense – whisking. Rats move their facial whiskers back and forth about eight times per second to sense what’s around them. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel tried to figure out if humans could acquire this sense. And if they can, what could understanding the process of adapting to new sensory input tell …More

Chaim Weizmann: The Tale of Israel’s First President

Chaim Weizmann is remembered in Jewish history as Israel’s first president, but this was only the apex of a varied trajectory that included groundbreaking scientific discoveries, humanitarianism, and a whirlwind political movement. As the New York Times wrote in his 1952 obituary, “Chaim Weizmann's life was sufficiently full of adventure, romance, accomplishment and fulfillment to have been lived by a dozen men.” Weizmann is a product of humble beginnings. Born in 1874 near Pinsk, Belarus …More

Study Finds Precious Stem Cells Are Assigned ‘Bodyguard’ Cells

NoCamels Team, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News Hiding deep inside our bone marrow — the flexible tissue found in the interior of bones — are special cells. They wait patiently for the hour of need, at which point these blood forming stem cells can proliferate and differentiate into billions of mature blood cells to help the body cope with infection, for example, or they can turn into extra red blood cells for low oxygen levels at high altitudes. Even in emergencies, however, the body sticks to a …More

US Adopts Israeli Device Saving Lives In Intensive Care Units

NoCamels Team, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News An Israeli medical device that is saving lives in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide is now being tested at a dozen US hospital emergency departments to see if it could keep patients out of intensive care. The NICOM (non-invasive cardiac output monitor), made in Israel by the Tel Aviv-based Cheetah Medical, is a uniquely non-invasive system used by medical centers in several countries to monitor hemodynamics – the movement of blood from the heart to the …More

Israeli Study Finds Brain Can Learn While Sleeping

While sleeping, the brain can strengthen information it previously processed, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Subjects who participated in the study were able to associate tones with smells when awake after being exposed to both simultaneously during sleep. As a participant slept, a tone was played and then an odor was presented. An unpleasant odor was given with one noise, while a pleasant one was presented with another. The subject's breathing patterns …More

NoCamels Team, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News Prof. Ronnie Kozlov from the Israel Science Foundation thinks that ethanol would be better as a beer than as a grain-based fuel supplement served from a gas pump. That’s why he is looking forward to results from a new Israeli government initiative, a research startup fund called I-CORE – an acronym for Israeli Centers for Research Excellence. One of the first I-CORE facilities, opened in August, is dedicated to renewable energy research. This is one …More

Research Finds ‘Fool’s Gold’ Regulates World Oxygen Levels

NoCamels Team, NoCamels - Israeli Innovation News New research done at the Weizmann Institute, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin and California Institute of Technology, suggests that sulfur plays a large role in regulating atmospheric oxygen levels. As sulfur cycles through the earth’s atmosphere, oceans and land, it undergoes chemical changes that are often coupled with changes in other elements, such as oxygen. Although this affects concentrations of free oxygen, sulfur has traditionally …More
