World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder renewed criticism of Hungary’s prime minister for failing to crack down on the ultranationalist Jobbik party. “Unfortunately,” Lauder told the WJC plenary assembly Monday, “we did not hear words about Jobbik and what they’re doing” in Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s speech to the gathering's opening session on Sunday night. “Unfortunately it’s more and more important for governments to placate a group of voters than …More

The largest number of attendees on record turned out for a pro-Jewish rally in Hungary Sunday, a sign organizers said had to do with rising anti-Semitism in the nation. Some 10,000 took part in the gathering in Budapest, more than double the number that attended last year. Local US and Israeli ambassadors took part in Sunday’s event, which is held to honor the memories of those lost in the Holocaust. The event is held each year, but many associated with the march said this year’s attendance was …More

The Jewish community of Thessaloniki in northern Greece will hold a series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the first deportations of the city’s Jews during WWII. On March 15, 1943, the Nazis sent the first convoy of some 4,000 Jews from Thessaloniki to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. By August, 49,000 out of the city’s pre-war population of 55,000 Jews had been deported. Fewer than 2,000 survived. Planned events will include a march on March 16 from the city’s Liberty Square …More

Jewish Leaders React to Pope Benedict's Resignation

Jewish leaders are already reacting to news that Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning from his post, the first pontiff to do so in 600 years. Israel’s chief rabbi, Yona Metzger, had warm words for the outgoing pope, saying, “During his period [as pope] there were the best relations ever between the church and the chief rabbinate and we hope that this trend will continue.” “I think he deserves a lot of credit for advancing inter-religious links the world over between Judaism, Christianity …More
